Site: 135 Storm Road

Ithaca-based artist Karen Brummund makes time-based drawings that use public space like a canvas. In a project series on buildings, Karen creates a drawing of the building and digitally enlarges it to the same scale as the building. Next, it is printed on numerous sheets of letter-sized paper and hung on the facade. The interlacing layers of the real and represented create a new imaginary space.

On Saturday, June 14, 2008, Karen will install a new, temporary installation at 135 Storm Road in Groton, New York. The installation will hang until the papers are destroyed and fall off. The specific length will be determined by wind, rain, or time.  The installation will be documented through video, photography, and community drawings. These materials will be integrated as layers in future artworks.

On Sunday, June 15, 2008, the public is invited to experience the installation and create a drawing of the installation. Karen will join with the community to observe the changes to the drawing and to find new ways of seeing the building. Individuals may choose to contribute the drawing to the artist. The artist will use the drawings to document the project in exhibitions and to inspire new work.  No drawing experience is required. Paper and graphite will be provided. Karen Brummund was award a grant from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County and the Cornell Council for the Arts to complete this project.

With a background in urban community development, Karen Brummund’s work is rooted in public space and community experience. Her performative works are the basis for new videos and prints. Her work has been included in a number of group exhibitions, screenings, and public spaces in England, Russia, Canada, and the USA. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Karen Brummund completed her Masters of Fine Arts in London, England. She is currently working for Cornell University’s Fine Arts Library and College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and will be showing a video installation at the Everson 2008 Biennial.
